The Green Drake is nestled in the center of the charming Victorian mountain town of Basalt, Colorado. Founded in the mid 1800’s as a railroad stop for the Midland railroad, Basalt has carefully retained its mountain hamlet appearance, character and friendliness. Basalt is a progressive community situated at the heart of the Roaring Fork Valley on Colorado’s Western Slope. Originally settled by European immigrants and incorporated in 1901, Basalt was the regional hub for the Colorado Midland Railroad, built to carry coal and silver ore between Aspen and Leadville. It was named for the black volcanic rock that forms Basalt Mountain just north of town. Historically a boom-bust economy rocked by an erratic mining industry, contemporary Basalt flourishes in a strong business environment, including restaurants, boutiques, art galleries, the Basalt Library, and the newer Riverside Plaza. Modern-day Basalt boasts of restored Victorian brick buildings that line the main street and house the wonderful collection of quaint shops, art galleries and charming restaurants, all within a few steps of the Green Drake Motel.
The Green Drake is located near the junction of the Frying Pan and Roaring Fork Rivers, both internationally acclaimed for fine fly fishing, kayaking and river rafting. World-class skiing at Aspen Mountain, Highlands, Buttermilk, and Snowmass is just minutes away. Hunting, hiking, biking, camping and golf are all available in the immediate vicinity of Basalt and the motel.
The Green Drake has a wide variety of clean, comfortable and affordable accommodations. Our suites have a sitting room (with convertible sofa or futon), bedroom with queen bed and bath. Some suites also have small kitchens. We have large one and two bedroom suites with separate living rooms and kitchens. A few simple hotel rooms are also available. The rooms are recently painted and many of the rooms were also re-carpeted. Guests are encouraged to take advantage of the wonderful variety of affordable cafes and restaurants for breakfast and other meals, all within walking distance of the motel.
