BEFORE ASPEN’S NEWEST Mexican restaurant even opened its doors, it was already generating buzz around town. Word of the authentic Mexican fare at La Palapa spread through Aspen’s underground so fast that hotel concierges were directing guests there even before owners had published the phone number. They didn’t know the exact address, but they knew the place—in the heart of downtown Aspen, just above Zane’s Tavern on South Hunter Street—and they knew it was good.
La Palapa’s slope side fare conjures menus you’d find beachside in Mexico. Start with a sample from the ceviche menu, with your choice of shrimp or tilapia. Spice it up with jalapeño lime juice, add octopus, and you’ll practically feel the ocean breeze.
Follow that with a hot seven seas cocktail, jam packed with every ocean delight, from shrimp, oysters, octopus and scallops to clams, mussels, crab legs and red snapper.
