The Sopris Sun is Carbondale, Colorado’s non-profit weekly newspaper. It was born from this community, it endeavors to reflect the diverse faces of Carbondale, and it depends on the greater community for content, advertising, and financial support.
History
The Sopris Sun was founded in early 2009 sits under the majestic Mt. Sopris. When the for-profit Valley Journal newspaper, a weekly that had served the Roaring Fork Valley for 34 years, ceased publication on Christmas Eve 2008. Recognizing that Carbondale needed a truly local paper during the hard economic times of the recession as much as—or perhaps more than—it ever had, a group of local citizens came together over beer and pizza to answer the question, “What can we do about this?”
The Paper Today
More than four years later, The Sun is still shining on Carbondale. Each week, we distribute 4,000 copies at 80 locations from Glenwood Springs to Aspen and Carbondale to Redstone. Allyn Harvey is a Town Trustee. Becky Young’s son, Will Grandbois, is our talented webmaster and serves on The Sopris Sun board. The Third Street Center is bustling with life and good works. As a non-profit weekly, The Sun cannot cover fast-breaking news the way the corporate-owned dailies can. What we can do is approach stories and issues through Carbondale’s eyes, considering and analyzing their impacts on this unique place and the people who live here. And then there are the photos. Just glance through past issues of The Sun and you’ll notice the importance we place on capturing Carbondale’s unique spirit in photos. Editorially, we don’t take a position, but we offer you, our readers, many ways to respond to the news and to express your views.
